Gift daw
Last saturday we threw a party in celebration of Dad's birthday and for the anniversary of a life size Virgin Mary image/statue that was given to him as a gift 10+ years ago. I'm perfectly ok with celebrating my Dad's birthday ... with the anniversary thingie however, it has become somewhat of a burden for us specially at times of financial problems.
However uncatholic it may come out, this "gift" we have just seem to be a business and a scam. I love God. I love the Lord Jesus. I believe in the importance of a church, however do not believe in excessive superstitious worship in images or statues which I consider idol worship. I also limit my worship to the Father and the Lord Jesus, and I closely study and examine those I choose to believe in.
For 10 plus years now we have been obligated to throw a party for devotees which seem to grow exponentially in number every year, I'm sure my dad wouldn't mind a simple celebration for his birthday. But hey, it has to be a party ... for them. There's also the matter of replacing the image's dress/gown annually ... at P5,000 atleast, and no you can't say pass .... they insist!
I happened to chance answering a phone reminder for "the event of the year". My blood pressure went up when I talked to one of the lady devotees, I got a taste of how demanding they where. My God! they don't even know how to courteously talk to people! X(
My mom even told me that they threatened to take the image/statue away one time, when my parents told them we didn't have a budget for the annual fashion update. I told my mom to let them take it, the next time they do!
I don't really have a say in this, but I get the feeling my parents just let it happen to save face from the friends and the pretentious people who just happen to know where to go every time my dad celebrates his birthday.
Anyway, the celebrations last weekend messed up my body clock. I couldn't sleep at day time with all the commotion, and I'm near back to zero with the night shift thing. Arrgh! It feels like I want to vomit every morning again! Oh well ... I'll have to adjust ... again.

i agree with you. the next time they threaten, let them take it back. better yet, initiate the return. you will be able to save both money and a life size space.
well, minsan talaga, yung mga old school catholics needs to be re-educated with their faith.
oh by the way happy birthday to ur dad
iRonnie - if only I had the final say on it.
jeprocks - yep. it's as if the images are little Gods sometimes.
thanks for the greeting ~ on my dad's behalf
this is sad. i hate your church already.. demands and excesses. tsk tsk!
the philosphical bastard - the devotees are not really from the church but a totally different group entirely.
the practice of having different symbols or labels to the same deity that is practiced through out the country in different churches however spawned the beginning of such groups.
